On electrically driven pattern-forming instabilities in planar nematics

چکیده
2014 The theoretical description of the threshold and near-threshold behavior of electrohydrodynamic convection in nematic liquid crystals in the (low-frequency) conduction regime is reconsidered. We present essentially the full three-dimensional linear stability analysis of the basic state and a major part of the weaklynonlinear theory of the convective state. Boundary conditions at the upper and lower plates as well as the time dependence are treated rigorously but the flexoelectric effect is neglected. Related transitions like the periodic splay-twist instability, which is relevant in polymer materials with positive dielectric anisotropy, are also considered. We give criteria for finding the oblique-roll state and for the competition between different instabilities. Comparison with experiments is made wherever possible. Good qualitative and sometimes quantitative agreement is found. J. Phys. France 49 (1988) 1875-1899 NOVEMBRE 1988,

CONVECTIVE PATTERNS IN LIQUID CRYSTALS DRIVEN BY ELECTRIC FIELD An overview of the onset behaviour
A systematic overview of various electric-field induced pattern forming instabilities in nematic liquid crystals is given. Particular emphasis is laid on the characterization of the threshold voltage and the critical wavenumber of the resulting patterns. The standard hydrodynamic description of nematics predicts the occurrence of striped patterns (rolls) in five different wavenumber ranges, whi...

This paper presents a novel robust fractional PIλ controller design for flexible joint electrically driven robots. Because of using voltage control strategy, the proposed approach is free of problems arising from torque control strategy in the design and implementation. In fact, the motor's current includes the effects of nonlinearities and coupling in the robot manipulator. Therefore, cancella...
متن کاملTask-space Control of Electrically Driven Robots
Actuators of robot operate in the joint-space while the end-effect or of robot is controlled in the task-space. Therefore, designing a control system for a robotic system in the task-space requires the jacobian matrix information for transforming joint-space to task-space, which suffers from uncertainties. This paper deals with the robust task-space control of electrically driven robot manipula...
متن کاملPattern formation in smectic liquid crystal lms
Many initially uniform systems can develop regular patterns of spatial structure when driven su ciently far from equilibrium. In their simplest forms, these patterns resemble soft condensed phases. Pattern formation takes place via instabilities that are the nonequilibrium equivalent of phase transitions. We rst provide a general overview of the study of pattern formation in uid dynamical syste...
